The Unified Theory of the Nervous System
and Behavior

Cognitive Philosophy /Brain Theory by Steven Michael Harris

Cellular Time

The experience of time at the cellular level is very different from that of the organism. Time is a relative experience when talking about a solar system, or geologic time, or in dealing with the speed of light, or at the subatomic level. The same for cells.

We experience a day with different experiences of comfort and awakeness in the morning than in the evening and a different experience at night when sleeping. Our day is the basic cycle of our life and our sense of time is based pretty much on the experience of a day from waking to sleeping. In this cycle there is the greatest contrast between the experience of being awake and the experience of being asleep.

At the cellular level there is the greatest contrast in the cycle between being awake (firing an action potential) and being asleep (not firing). This is the cellular day. The cell strives through its living mechanisms to fire, to experience, to stimulate itself. Whatever this experience of life that comes from firing an action potential is to the cell, that experience does not exist when it is not firing. A cycle of representational life and death, awake and asleep, exists for the nerve cell in a very different scale than the experience of a large organism such as we all are.

Our sense of the time experience of a cell is only conceptually understandable in the distant way that the concept of movement at the subatomic level can be conceived.

The cellular day is not a constant relative to the rotation of the earth. The cellular day can occur thousands of times a second, a few times a second, or something inbetween with many changes in frequency.

To understand our sensations and consciousness requires that we consider the building blocks of such that come from the many individual cells. We must learn to conceive of the experience of a cell that provides it's small piece of any moment of such consciousness.

Many of the problems of medicine, biology, psychology and philosophy require an understanding of the basic mathematical principles behind how the nervous system does what it does to achieve function and experience, and that mathematics is not explained using narrowly-focused statistics. Understanding how this math works will be the tool for the discovery of many answers of great importance to humanity. The case for this concept and the offering of an explanation of this kind of math is made in the many essays of this website.

On these pages you will find ideas that should haunt you. Included are new concepts in science, medicine, sociology, evolutionary psychology, philosophy and more...

This website and the podcasts of Everyone's Revolution explain how the brain creates the mind, but many side issues must be resolved in order to teach this material. Once you realize that the "hard problems" are really the first problems to be answered, you then have a tool for changing all of science and medicine by explaining a massive number of discoveries that will fall into line in order to unify the evidence. All of the evidence is good. The interpretations of the evidence are mistaken in many cases. For ten years now there have been new discoveries of evidence that all move in the direction of supporting this theory (or this school of many theories) and its predictions. Quite a few people have started to pay attention to this theory as well.
